A hand of man playing chess.
Young chess masters and seven year-old identical twins, Deauwin and Beauwin Rens from George in the Western Cape, are travelling to Greece to represent South Africa at the World Youth Rapid and Blitz Championships.
They have been playing chess since they were two years-old.
The twins share in their father’s passion for the game and have already outplayed him.
Bradwin Rens is also a chess instructor and their mentor.
Following a call for donations to fund their trip, sponsors have come forward to make their dream come true.
Rens says the boys showed exceptional skills from a very young age.
“I walked in the other day and they were sitting behind a closed door with the chess board, making moves. When I saw that, I told myself, we’ve got something here. I started guiding, showing them, let’s do this, instead of that. To me it’s never been a matter of pushing them or telling them, you need to do this. So, for me having them doing it, reaching all the goals in chess, it is something else for me.”
