The South African women’s indoor hockey team had to settle for a draw against Thailand in their opening match of the World Cup in Croatia.

The Proteas ranked seventh in the world, were caught napping when Thailand scored in the opening seconds of the match.

But South Africa went into the first break with a 2-1 lead following goals in the last five minutes of the first quarter.

They held onto that one goal advantage until Thailand’s Kittiya Losantia secured a four-all draw with the only goal of the fourth and final quarter.

South Africa’s next Pool B match is against world number three Austria followed by a match against 10th ranked Poland on Wednesday.
