SA resumes large scale apple exports to Thailand after 16 years

2 minutes

South Africa will resume large scale apple exports to Thailand again after 16 years. Exports to this market were lost after 2008, following changes in requirements from a trade partner.

Ceres, in the Witzenberg Municipality of the Western Cape, provided the first shipment of Joya apples today.

Authorities say the establishment of new markets are vital to ensure growth and stability in the industry.

Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen says the Department has been working hard to establish new trade partners in the East and other regions.

“If you end up with choppy waters in one market, it doesn’t provide a shock to the sector. So, the more we’re able to open up different markets for South African goods rather than relying on people we’ve always relied on, I think the more resilient it’s going to make the agricultural sector as well. And believe you me, South Africa’s farmers and farm workers are amongst the best in the world. And having traveled all over the world as we start to open these markets, there is a huge demand for high-quality agricultural goods, particularly our fruits and citrus, and wines around the rest of the world.”
