Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande says South Africa cannot afford to ignore Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) if it wants to keep up with a rapidly changing world.

Nzimande was delivering the keynote address at the National System of Innovation Transformation Summit in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

He emphasises that these technologies impact the poor and should be explored for their potential benefits.

“Major advances in science and technology have been transforming many aspects of the global economy and bringing with it huge disruptions in labour markets, an example being 4IR and infusing technologies such as AI. Whilst no section of society will be left, the worst effect of these disruptive changes are being felt by the most marginalised section of society.”

The inclusion of previously marginalised communities, women and the youth in science, technology and innovation sectors will also form part of the discussions at the summit.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is also among those in attendance. Lesufi says innovation and technological modernisation are needed to address some of Gauteng’s challenges.

He says empowering and supporting the youth to be at the forefront of technology and digital innovation is the key driver to improving the lives of the people in Gauteng.

“During the State of the Province Address, we identified 13 challenges that are facing the people of Gauteng. We have requested various government institutions to come up with some innovations and ideas that can assist us in ensuring that when it rains, our traffic lights do not stop functioning. We want to let go of paper and use technology to ensure that our people can get access without going through difficulties.”
