Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has announced that South Africa and Mozambique are planning to establish a one-stop truck control zone in each country to reduce congestion at the borders.
Creecy announced talks with her Mozambican counterpart, Joao Matlombe, at the Lebombo border post.
Minister Creecy says plans are under way to establish a temporary one-stop processing facility at the Kilometre-seven truck stop.
“The border is very tiny and congested. Once we have taken over and we’ve sorted out the IT issues. We already have the temporary mobile trucks for our officials to be in. We can in the next couple of weeks move those trucks to Kilometre-seven. The Mozambicans are already co-located with us at the borders. So, it’s really about taking the existing arrangement for trucks that is operating at the border and taking it to Kilometre-seven.”
Matlombe says plans are already under way to construct their own facility at Kilometre-four in Ressano Garcia.
“We have just launched a tender, and we have already hired a company that is going to build the infrastructure on our side. We expect to see in the first quarter of 2026 if we can start with construction. It is a complex process; it will take roughly one year or half a year. In terms of infrastructure, there are some improvements that we also need to do along the road, but the facility, maybe in one year or one and a half, we are going to finish all the infrastructure.”
