The International Relations Department’s Director-General Zane Dangor’s delegation has arrived in New York.

The aim of the delegation’s visit is to brief member states of the G20 for which South Africa is the current president.

Dangor serves as South Africa’s G20 Sherpa. His responsibilities include taking the discussions and agreements to the final summit of the G20 Heads of State and Government during Pretoria’s year-long presidency.

Dangor is expected to meet with Deputy Secretary- General Amina Mohammed during his visit.

The meeting with member states is billed as an opportunity to better understand the priorities of this year’s G20 engagements under a theme that places key UN objectives at the core of its work, Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.

Dangor’s visit to the United States comes during a period of high political tensions in relation to the Trump administration and their lack of engagement at the ministerial meetings hosted in South Africa last month.

Diplomats say Dangor will engage with a number of G20 member states and that a press conference with international media is on the agenda for later in the week.
