A glass of wine.
Dozens of Russian winemakers have gathered in Moscow to swirl, sip and savour the drink. The aim is not to sell bottles but build bridges.
This inaugural BRICS Wine Forum brings together an international gathering of wine enthusiasts.
The goal is to help each other’s markets and wineries flourish and grow, leaning on South Africa’s strong winemaking heritage.
Winemaker, Russian President’s Special Representative for Relations with International Organisations on Sustainable Development Goals, Boris Titov says, “South African wines have a very big experience in wine growing, which is very important. We can share experience between the two countries and, between all BRICS countries who are doing wine, but also in wine tourism.”
An initiative to set up a BRICS Wine Tourism Association was floated to strengthen cooperation in winemaking and tourism within the BRICS countries.
Russia is asserting itself as one of the fastest-growing wine-producing countries.
But over the past decade Russians have developed a taste for South African wine too.
Sales have gone up between 80% and 120% last year.
