The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged religious leaders to preach road safety messages to congregants during the Easter holidays. This is due to the high volume of people who will be travelling to various holiday destinations and others going on pilgrimages during the long weekend.
RTMC statistics show that a total of 236 fatalities were recorded during last year’s Easter weekend compared to 207 during the same period in 2023.
The RTMC spokesperson, Simon Zwane, says a crash-free Easter weekend is achievable if all drivers commit to obeying road traffic laws.
“With traffic expected to peak in the coming days, when people will be traveling for pilgrimages and to various Easter destinations, religious leaders are being called upon to include messages of road safety in their sermons this weekend to encourage congregants to obey the rules of the road, and to travel safely and reach their destinations and places of us of pilgrimage safely.”
