Authorities says the beach-cleanup operation on Robben Island off Cape Town forms part of an ongoing effort to preserve the island as a national heritage site. Over 200 volunteers took part in the cleanup, over the weekend.
The initiative was led by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with organisations including the Robben Island Museum and the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.
Thanks to all volunteers, staff from @FNBSA Peninsula Beverages, @2OceansAquarium , SANCCOB, Robben Island, @Vodacom @WCGovCas who came out to help clean the shores of @robben_island, our @UNESCO World Heritage site.

Organisers say removing waste from the island also helps protect marine life.
“In celebrating Human Rights Day, we want to remind the people of our province that it is their right to have access to our beautiful heritage sites and to contribute to the upkeep of these sites,” says Provincial Minister, Ricardo MacKenzie.
MacKenzie says that if every person commits to one small act of service, they can make a meaningful impact in preserving the heritage of the province for many years to come.
