South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Human Resources Group Executive, Rachel Masuku, says a restructure at the public broadcaster’s sales division may lead to possible retrenchments.
Masuku was speaking in an interview regarding salary negotiations at the corporation.
“As part of the efficiencies that we are trying to introduce, in the way we do things, we have had to restructure our operations in sales and how our employees in sales carry out their duties. That restructure might lead to possible retrenchments. It’s not that we want to retrench. However, in line with the Labour Relations Act, if there is a possibility that one or more employees might be retrenched, you need to institute a Section 189,” says Masuku.
The SABC is set to pay a 4.5% salary increase for the 2025/26 financial year to non-unionised employees.
This will take effect from 1 November 2025.
Masuku says the SABC met with the Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) last week to make the 4.5% offer however feedback has not yet been received from the union after engaging with its members.
She says the organisation remains committed to concluding the process with Bemawu in good faith; and will continue to engage constructively to reach finality in relation to the unionised employees.
