2 minutes

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says police resources have been increased in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, to fight crime.

Mchunu is visiting the area following a shooting incident at the Marry Me informal settlement last weekend.

The death toll in the incident in which patrollers were gunned down, has risen to six while six others are still in hospital.

He confirmed that one suspect has been arrested. Mchunu says a manhunt has been launched for five other suspects.

“We have increased resources, more personnel and vehicles and other things that we are still dealing with and some factors that the premier pointed out. We are keen to clean out Soshanguve, efforts were made before, we are building on those efforts. We will overcome the problem.”

He has called for cooperation amongst various stakeholders in the fight against crime.

“We would like to invite more people in Soshanguve and elsewhere to take a stand around crime and help all of us, the country. They were there to combat crime when they were unexpectedly attacked by the suspects. We are happy at this stage, the briefing that we got from the police is that one person has been identified and arrested and two are being questioned as we speak.”
