Residents of Rustenburg in the North West are bracing themselves for water shedding, due to rapidly declining levels at Vaalkop Dam.
Magalies Water has implemented water interruptions in areas around Rustenburg, Moses Kotane and Thabazimbi.
This prompted the Rustenburg Local Municipality to impose restrictions and implement water shedding.
According to Magalies Water, the dam levels are currently standing at 23 percent. This will also affect mining operations negatively.
Some Rustenburg residents have reacted to the water challenge.
“The municipality is trying to provide us with water through water tankering, though we have challenges to get water from the taps.”
“They do water restrictions table, but the issue is that the water comes out dirty. We can’t even drink it. So, we use it to bath and wash our clothes, other than that we have to buy water.”
Rustenburg Local Municipality spokesperson Odirile Madiba says they have resorted to providing water tankers at intervals.
“We are imposing restrictions and also, we are water shedding, water shedding means we are giving our residents water per schedule. So, we issue out a timetable when we are water shedding on different areas. So, that we are able to let our reservoir fill to full capacity so that we can maintain the demand.”
