Reported rape cases decline in SA: SAPS

South African Police Service (SAPS) crime registrar Major-General Thulare Sekhukhune has announced that the country has seen a decrease in the number of reported rape cases.

He announced this when he outlined the third-quarter crime statistics in Pretoria.

The statistics are for the period from October 1st to December 31st.

Sekhukhune says three provinces recorded an increase in rape cases.

“We have recorded a decrease of 373 rapes, whereas in the previous comparable period we had 11,803 rapes. Currently, we have reported 11,430, and the three provinces that have recorded increases in terms of the rapes are the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape.”

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says the murder rate decreased by 8.7% between October and December last year compared to the previous year.

Cachalia says, despite this, crime levels in the country remain unacceptably high.

“While we have seen double-digit reduction in murder in five provinces, namely KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State and the North West, much smaller decreases were recorded in the Western and Eastern Cape, with slight increases recorded in Limpopo and Northern Cape,” says Cachalia.
