The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Transport has confirmed that Rea Vaya bus services have resumed after being suspended on Tuesday.

Operations were halted following the fatal shootings of two Rea Vaya bus drivers on Monday evening. The drivers were killed within ten minutes of each other in separate incidents in Mapetla and Protea Glen, Soweto.

City of Johannesburg spokesperson Virgil James called for cooperation to prevent future attacks.

“The city also calls upon all key transport stakeholders to support initiatives to prevent violence, vandalism, and any kind of attacks on personnel or BRT infrastructure that cause suspension of services and leave thousands of commuters stranded,” says James.

He adds that internal discussions were held between transport management, staff, and bus operators Piotrans and Litsamaiso to outline security measures and reassure employees of their safety.
