Rand Water urges consumers to save water

Rand Water has urged consumers to save water while it continues to maintain its infrastructure. This emerged at a Rand Water Seminar in Kempton Park – east of Johannesburg.

Stakeholders are discussing challenges and opportunities surrounding water security under the theme: “What Threatens Water Security in South Africa”.

Rand Water’s Group Chief Executive Officer Sipho Mosai says ageing infrastructure results in almost 40% of non-revenue water being lost in Gauteng.

“Due to extreme weather events, we are seeing that water is becoming scarcer and more volatile. But over and above that as a result of flooding, the water is getting polluted. This has impacted the water cycle, in so far as biodiversity and access to water and sanitation (is concerned).”

To combat this, we’re aiming for increased energy self-reliance, reducing dependency on Eskom.

However, a significant challenge remains: rising debt threatens the financing of critical water infrastructure.
