Johannesburg Water says they are on track to finish all the maintenance work at the Eikenhof pump station by this evening. Rand Water has been performing a 86-hour system maintenance leaving scores without water for over three days.

Affected areas includes parts of Randburg, Roodepoort, Soweto and Johannesburg Central.

The bulk water supply entity says they chose the off-peak season due to industries having closed and some people having gone on holiday.

Johannesburg Water Spokesperson, Nombuso Tshabalala, says some stations are already pumping water into reservoirs

“While Rand Water has completed maintenance at Zwaartkopies, Johannesburg Water is recovering and pumping has resumed. Rand Water has also confirmed that maintenance at its Eikenhof pump station is scheduled for completion this evening at 9 o’ clock,” says Tshabalala.

Meanwhile, some Joburg residents have raised their frustrations over the lack of water tankers in their areas.

In Randburg, residents rely on a local filling station for water.

“I’m shocked that the government has not supplied any water tankers around the area. We drove around in the past few days looking for it. We are grateful to the owners of this place who allowed us to get water because water is not cheap,” says one of the residents.

Another resident says, “If they were going to do this maintenance, they should have known and organised tankers on daily basis, but they didn’t. And now we have to resort to finding where water is, it’s terrible, we can’t cope.”
