Johannesburg City Manager Floyd Brink says recent Rand Water maintenance had a widespread impact on the City’s water network, affecting several interconnected systems and leading to reduced reservoir levels in some areas.
He was speaking during a media briefing in Midrand, where officials provided an update on recovery efforts following the first phase of the maintenance.
Brink says the pressure on the system forced the City to implement controlled shutdowns to protect critical infrastructure.
“The Johannesburg water network was also reduced and at some stages some of it was also stopped and this affected multiple interconnected systems including Power-mid, Swartkoppies and Eikenhof. This also affected areas such as Sandton, Midrand, and the central networks. As a result, some of our reservoir levels dropped to critical operating levels, requiring controlled shutdowns in the City.”

Johannesburg Water says measures are in place to support residents still experiencing water supply challenges.
Managing Director Ntshavheni Mukwevho says water tankers and stationary tanks have been deployed across affected areas, with the number expected to reduce as supply stabilises.
“We have tankers across the City, in terms of places that are still struggling. All in all, we have assigned 67 water tankers including 150 stationary tanks that were deployed in various areas.”
