Ramaphosa unveils government plan to tackle hunger, food poverty

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the government has adopted a multifaceted plan to tackle hunger. The President was delivering a keynote address at Stellenbosch University’s Social Justice Summit in Cape Town on Friday.

The summit brings together policymakers, legislators, civil society, traditional leaders, academics and the judiciary.

Ramaphosa says the adopted medium-term development plan has highlighted that food security is the key to reducing poverty and improving human development.

He says the first target is to reduce the proportion of South Africans living below the food poverty line, from 30.9% in 2022 to 25% by 2029.

Ramaphosa says food is a fundamental human right. “The first is to reform policy and legal frameworks. These include the integrated food security strategy, the national food and nutrition security plan and the nutrition policy implementation plan. These policies have enabled us to implement a series of programmes to deliver nutrition and food directly through educational, community, as well as institutional systems.”

He also wants to reduce the number of individuals who are vulnerable to hunger, from 5,4 million to below 2,9 million over the same period.

Ramaphosa further highlights that to achieve these plans in the remaining four years, the government will have to prioritise a coordinated set of strategic interventions.
