President Cyril Ramaphosa will launch South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 at Parliament this morning.
Brazil’s President Lula da Silva handed over the presidency to Ramaphosa during a G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro last month.
South Africa’s leadership of the group presents a unique opportunity to shape global policies and advocate for Africa’s interests on the world stage.
Issues the presidency will focus on include addressing poverty, unemployment as well as Africa’s development.
South Africa will host the G20 under the theme – ‘Fostering solidarity, equality, and sustainable development’.
At the Cape Town Conversation conference hosted by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation last week, Deputy President, Paul Mashatile said the country will use its presidency to prioritise Africa’s development.
It is also expected South Africa will facilitate a platform to reflect the aspirations and challenges of the Global South.
