South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The presidency says President Cyril Ramaphosa will tonight take the nation into his confidence following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi against politicians and senior police officers.
It’s been a week since Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu accusing him of corrupt activities with notorious individuals. Mkhwanazi’s security personnel has since been tightened following the explosive allegations.
Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says President Ramaphosa takes matters of national security very seriously.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa has been seized with this matter in recent days and will following various consultations take the nation into his confidence at 19:00 – the 13 of July.”
The president was out of the country, attending the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, when Mkhwanazi held his briefing.
The President took time to engage the media at the end of the summit, and he had this to say on the matter, “This is not a matter that we should not give attention to. It is a serious matter. It has to do with the security of our people, but it also has to do with our adherence with the rule of the law. Those who have done wrong should be dealt with and should be dealt with thoroughly in terms of the constitution and in terms of our laws.”
