President Cyril Ramaphosa has held talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to discuss Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three and a half years ago.
The conversation follows Putin’s visit to Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday, where he met with President Donald Trump.
“President Putin expressed satisfaction with the manner in which his talks with President Trump proceeded and the emerging alignment on the peace process.”
A week ago, the two presidents (South Africa and Russia) had a telephonic discussion on the peace process with Ukraine and engaged on issues of mutual bilateral interest.
President Putin expressed his recognition and appreciation for South Africa’s involvement in advancing a peace process between Russia and Ukraine.
President Ramaphosa expressed South Africa’s full support for peace initiatives that will end the war and contribute to a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.
They agreed to further their discussions on moving forward the strategic relationship between their two countries.
