US President Donald Trump meets South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 21, 2025
International Relations and Diplomacy expert Dr. Oscar van Heerden has commended President Cyril Ramaphosa for not allowing the conversation with US President Donald Trump to degenerate into an argument.
Ramaphosa has met Trump at the White House and the two took questions from the media.
Ramaphosa is visiting the US with a delegation in a bid to reset relations.
President Ramaphosa appealed to Trump to listen to the accounts from his delegation regarding the situation in South Africa and the erroneous claims of a genocide taking place against white farmers in the country.
Dr. Van Heerden says Trump’s strategy was anticipated.
“It was expected that Trump was not going to let the white genocide matter go, we saw the dramatics around that. I think it’s a good thing that Ramaphosa, did not stoop to the level of them degenerating to wanting to debate and argue and besides he was just not afforded enough time to give reasonable explanation and I think that Trump’s strategy was killing two birds with one stone. He simply had to bring a matter to a conclusion on the white genocide issue and why he brought the refugees to America.”
