President Cyril Ramaphosa speaks at the Construction Summit.
President Cyril Ramphosa says the construction industry is once again poised to be the flywheel of growth, after contributing over 50% of the jobs created in the third quarter.
He was speaking at the Second Annual National Construction Summit underway in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, earlier on Thursday.
The latest labour survey has shown a decrease in the unemployment rate by over 1% in the last quarter. Ramaphosa says this is indicative of an industry on the rise and set to grow the economy and change lives.
“Infrastructure is poised to once again become the flywheel of the economy. Infrastructure investment is one of the most effective levers for stimulating economic activity. This is evident in the employment figures released by Statistics SA earlier this week. The Quarterly Labour Force Survey indicates a decrease in the official unemployment rate from 33.2 % in the second quarter of this year to 31.9 % in the third quarter. Employment increased by 248,000 in the third quarter. Construction was the biggest contributor with 130 000 new jobs. These statistics reflect an upswing in the industry.”
