‘Ramaphosa, GNU must prioritise fight against GBV’

1 minute

Thokozile Madonko, a researcher at Wits University’s Southern Centre for Inequality Studies, hopes that plans to address inequality and gender-based violence (GBV) will top President Cyril Ramaphosa’s list of priorities.

Ramaphosa will deliver the State of the Nation Address at the Cape Town City Hall this evening.

It will be the first SONA under the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Madonko says, “A researcher has argued that we have obscene inequality in the sense that it is so acute in terms of the differences between those at the bottom and those at the very top. And so hopefully the president will address some of the big ticket issues which have kind of fallen by the wayside in terms of GBV, to keep that at the top of his priority list. And the GNU needs to make sure that they address the gendered nature of our poverty and violence.”
