President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended his decision to select a panel that will recommend the appointment of the next National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).
He is answering oral questions in the National Assembly. He was first criticized by DA’s Glynnis Breytenbach that the panel doesn’t have a person experienced in prosecuting criminal matters.
He responded by saying he is open to good ideas. While BOSA leader Dr Mmusi Maimane suggested that it should rather be chaired by some of members of the GNU to avoid conflict of interest when ANC members are to be prosecuted in future.
Ramaphosa has expressed full confidence in the Minister of Justice Mmamoloko Kubayi as the chairperson of the panel.
“The panelists that I have appointed are all people of great integrity and great eminence and they are not about to be marginalized to be dominated or to be led into conflictual relationships or decisions so whatever decision coming out of the panel will be the panel’s decision. So I have full confidence in the ability of the minister,” says Ramaphosa.
