Ramaphosa defends decision not to fire Mchunu

President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended his decision not to fire Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave while receiving his full salary and ministerial benefits.

Ramaphosa accepted the Madlanga Commission interim report’s recommendations regarding police misconduct and corruption. He has faced harsh criticism for leaving out Mchunu when he announced that action would be taken against implicated government officials.

While on an oversight visit to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) National Command Centre in Brooklyn, Pretoria, Ramaphosa told the media that at right time he’s going to respond to all Madlanga Commission of Inquiry recommendations.

“The Madlanga Commission issued an interim report and I have studied it and I have accepted the recommendations and the work of the commission continues. And I know people have specifically asked about Minister Mchunu and I have said I am waiting for that process to be completed and it’s going to be completed in three months,” says Ramaphosa.

He says he is “not going let the Madlanga recommendations not be implemented”.
