R6 billion debt threatens water supply in Matjhabeng Municipality

Major parts of Matjhabeng Municipality in the Free State are likely to experience water shedding due to non-payment. The municipality owes the water board entity six billion rand.

In a statement released, the Matjhabeng Municipality has called on residents and businesses to pay their municipal rates in an effort to help settle the debt.

The municipality’s ongoing financial challenges continue to affect service delivery. To address the issue, the municipality is required to pay 60 million rand to Vaal Central Water by Wednesday. Failure to make this payment will lead to water cuts.

The municipality has warned that if residents do not comply with payment arrangements, there will be disconnections.
