R4.6bn loss sparks CIDB probe into KZN construction sector

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has launched an urgent probe into the KwaZulu-Natal construction sector, following explosive revelations that highly-rated contractors have failed to deliver on critical infrastructure projects.

The board says that this is now costing the province an estimated R4.6 billion.

Meanwhile, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma, has alleged that some of these entities may have fraudulently “bought” their high-level grading certificates, allowing them to secure massive tenders – while they lacked the actual capacity to complete the job.

CEO of the CIDB, Bongani Dladla responded to the allegations.

“The allegations that have been raised by the KZN Department of Transport that the major contributor to their project failures is due to the fact that they suspect that some of the highly graded contractors had bought their gradings, and we are investigating that matter to ensure that if there has been any foul play from the aspect of the registration process.”

“We can deal and deregister those contractors, but we are going also beyond to look at the procurement processes that led to those contractors and the performance of the client, consultants and contractors in that project,” Dladla adds.
