R20 million worth of cocaine found at Midrand smallholding

A crime intelligence-driven operation has led to the discovery of cocaine worth R20 million at a smallholding in Blue Hills, Midrand.

Police say a multidisciplinary team led by the Crime Intelligence Head Office, together with the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, SAPS Johannesburg K9, and members of the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), conducted the operation on Tuesday evening after receiving information about drugs being stored on the property.

According to a police statement, the drugs were brought into South Africa from a neighbouring country and were destined for Cape Town, Western Cape.

The cocaine, weighing about 80 kilograms, was found hidden in a storage room on the premises.

A 56-year-old man, believed to be the owner of the smallholding, has been arrested.

He is expected to appear in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court later this week on charges of possession and dealing in drugs.
