The Department of Human Settlements in Gauteng says Phase 1 of the Princess Plot Housing Development project in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, has been completed, and formal housing will be delivered to qualifying beneficiaries.
Residents have previously marched in the area, demanding answers over a R1 billion allocation made in 2015 for housing developments in the area, among others.
Department Spokesperson Tahir Sema says they have also finalised the necessary planning and technical work for Phase 2, which is expected to yield approximately 268 additional residential units.
“The commencement of Phase 2 remains dependent on outstanding municipal processes, including township establishment and the issuing of the required legal instruments by the City of Johannesburg. These processes fall within the city’s mandate. The City of Johannesburg is to convene a multi-departmental, city-wide initiative to address outstanding approvals, accelerate Phase 2 implementation, manage the challenges associated with the growth of the informal settlement, environmental issues and issues of land invasion and illegal occupation. As the department, we will receive regular updates from the city on the progress made through this initiative and will continue to provide technical and administrative support where required,” says Sema.
