Public Works Minister warned against appointing new IDT board

Lobby group Black Forum South Africa has threatened to take Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson to court if he proceeds with the appointment of five new board members to the Independent Development Trust (IDT).

The forum says the appointment of the five was flawed and has demanded that the minister withdraws his request to the master of the High Court to issue letters of authority.

CEO of Black Forum South Africa, Advocate Kgagudi Morota, “The procedure is that the minister must establish a selection committee which is going to run the entire nomination process. There is no selection committee which was established by minister to run this process. He just ordered the board to run with the entire nomination process and the board does not have powers to effect that process. So, that is the reason we wrote to the minister to nullify the process. If he fails to do so, we will make an urgent application in the High Court of South Africa to interdict the entire process.”

In December last year, the IDT was embroiled in an alleged corruption scandal relating to an R800 million tender to install Oxygen plants at Health facilities across South Africa.

This prompted MacPherson to launch an independent investigation after it was reported that two of the companies involved were not approved by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).

Concerns raised include fraudulent documentation by companies lacking necessary accreditation and governance issues within IDT, exacerbated by an inquorate board.
