Public Protector asked to probe ex-minister Dion George

Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Willie Aucamp says he has asked Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka to investigate former Minister Doctor Dion George.

Aucamp has alleged that George possibly abused state resources. According to Aucamp, the former Minister’s then Advisor and Acting Chief-of-Staff, Shelton Mollentze, as well as personal Assistant Traverse le Goff, must also be investigated.

George was removed as the minister in this portfolio late last year by President Cyril Ramaphosa, following a request from Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen, citing underperformance.

In his complaint submitted to the office of the Public Protector, Aucamp says that after assuming office, he was made aware of what he describes as a baseless investigation into his private business affairs.

He says the investigation appeared to have been potentially politically motivated and aimed at falsely linking him to the lion breeding industry which he has no association.
