Members of the public concerned about family members admitted to Tembisa Hospital, east of Johannesburg, are advised to contact 011 923 2000 for information. This follows a fire that broke out in the accident and emergency unit of the hospital last night.

Approximately 50 patients were evacuated to a safer section of the hospital. No casualties have been reported.

Gauteng Head of Health, Lesiba Molotana, confirmed, “As things stand, the fire was only contained and limited to the accident and emergency area. All other areas of the hospital remain functional and operational. Those that have family members in the hospital must be rest assured that their family members are not in immediate danger and they are being taken care of.”
