A social media account by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that the SA Police Service has flagged as fake.
Police say several fake social media accounts have been created purporting to be those of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
They say they know of 16 such accounts.
This comes after Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations that senior police officials are corrupt and have links to crime syndicates.
Several marches have since been held, demanding that action be taken against those involved in corruption.
Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says Mkhwanazi has no social media accounts.
“The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal would also like to plead with members of the public to refrain from using his photographs during various politically aligned marches, especially those against the State President. Although the Commissioner appreciates the support that people have shown towards the work of the police in KwaZulu-Natal, the use of his photographs and names on posters and banners during marches has the potential of sending unintended messages to government, government officials and the international community. The commissioner is against crime and criminals, not leaders in government.”
