A fan welcomes Proteas Women at OR Tambo Airport
South African Women’s Cricket team has touched down at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg with their silver medals around their necks, welcomed by hundreds of adoring fans.
The Proteas, who made their first appearance in a 50 over World Cup final in India on Sunday, may have stumbled over the final hurdle, but inspired many with their grit and determination at the World Cup.
The wife of coach Mandla Mashimbyi, Bronwyn, says it’s been a journey for the women’s cricket team to come to where they are today.
“So, excited, so happy, it’s been a journey for the entire team and we are so proud of them. It was such a proud moment to see South Africans on that field coming together, carrying the hope of the nation. It has been such a journey for all these girls, for the entire management. It’s not only Mandla, he has a team behind him, they’ve worked hard but this was mercy.”
