Proteas men’s cricket
South Africa’s national cricket team has won the first T20 International of the Triangular series at the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe.
The Proteas won the toss and managed to restrict Zimbabwe to 141 for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs. And the visitors cruised to a five wicket victory with 25 balls to spare.
Zimbabwe didn’t make the quickest of starts after losing the toss and being invited to bat first.
The lost opener Wesley Madhevere early on, for one and Clive Madande soon after for eight.
The opener Brian Bennett managed to score at better than a-run-a-ball, before he was dismissed for 30.
It was Zimbabwe’s captain Sikandar Raza, alongside Ryan Burl who gave the host’s innings some impetus.
Taking on the bowling, they shared in a 66-run stand to help lift their total to a more competitive one.
Raza was their top scorer, notching up his 15th T20 half-century.
Left-arm spinner George Linde took three for 10 as the homeside was eventually restricted to 141 for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs.
The Proteas made an even more pedestrian start to their innings than their opponents.
They lost their first three wickets, including skipper Rassie van der Dussen for the addition of just 38 runs, within the first six overs.
It was Dewald Brevis and debutant Rubin Hermann who took the fight to the hosts.
The pair smashed 72 runs from just 37 deliveries for the fourth wicket — putting the visitors in the driving seat.
Brevis was dismissed for a fighting 41 from 17 deliveries while Hermann was pick of the batsmen, scored 45 runs from just 37 deliveries.
Corbin Bosch and Linde scored the winnings runs, as South Africa coasted to a five wicket win with 25 deliveries to spare.
The Proteas next match at the Harare Sports Club is on Wednesday, against New Zealand.
