The Proteas during a match.
The South African men’s cricket team has taken an expected 1-0 lead in the two-match test series against Zimbabwe. The Proteas beat their hosts by 328 runs at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, wrapping up the match with a day and a half to spare.
Zimbabwe, that were set a target of 537 for victory, resumed their second innings on 32 for one earlier on Tuesday. Their resistance crumbled and they were bowled out for 208.
Wellington Masakadza made a defiant half century, while captain Craig Ervine contributed 49 to the losing cause.
Corbin Bosch, who scored a career-best 147 in South Africa’s second innings, was also the Proteas’ top performer with the ball in Zimbabwe’s second innings. He took five for 43 in 12 overs.
The second test starts on Sunday and will also be played in Bulawayo.
