Proteas kick off ICC Test Championship Mace trophy tour in Kimberley

Three months after lifting the coveted ICC Championship Mace trophy at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The Proteas are finally bringing the Mace trophy home and this time; it’s for the people.

The four-day six city tour kicked off in Kimberley in the Northern Cape and proceeded to Bloemfontein in Free State where the team played some mini cricket with fans.

The ICC Championship trophy made its way to Bloemfontein where fans were waiting with anticipation. The team says bringing the trophy to the people is significant and that celebrating the win with the nation remains a top priority.

“We played this competition for the people and it’s nice to show the country and to see all the exciting young fans and young cricketers out there and the people that are not so privileged to see how excited they are about the game of cricket. All the kids today have been so passionate and it’s been so heartwarming and it’s been an absolute pleasure to be involved with something so special, and these are the people we play for when we represent South Africa out on the field,” says all-rounder Corbin Bosch.

Proteas captain Themba Bavuma says they now have a good momentum but want to widen the squad and introduce new players.

“So, we want to widen the squad because some of us are older than we used to be so we want to make sure that the guys who come in when we are not there, they can hold their own at that level and I think just keep that standard up. If anything, keep the standard, keep pushing the standard higher, we are going for tests now in Pakistan to start the test cycle I mean that’s going to be challenging and its obviously going to be a good couple of important steps for us in terms of what we want to achieve,” says Bavuma.

For the little ones the honour was playing with their superstars.

“I was playing with Bavuma and I feel very happy, I asked him how it is about playing cricke? He said it’s very good and I also want to play cricket.”

“I’m feeling good because I played with the Proteas and I learnt a lot of stuff from the Proteas. First I couldn’t bowl now I can bowl perfectly.”

“Great and happy because I love cricket, it’s my favourite sport.”

The Proteas will be in Durban and Gqeberha on Wednesday.
