South Africa’s national cricket team will begin the defense of their World Test Championship title when they take on Pakistan in a two match Test series, starting at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday.
Stand-in Proteas captain Aiden Markram was upbeat and says that the squad is excited to test themselves in what they expect will be spin friendly wickets.
“You always get excited for a new cycle. The previous cycle went quite well for us and we managed to put the cherry on top which was really special, but when you look at it now it’s two/three years of playing good test cricket to lift the trophy and that’s where most of the focus has been. Naturally looking forward to the challenges that Pakistan face the spin friendly tracks. We assume as a team that’s not exposed to those conditions. It’s exciting for us and a great opportunity to get things right in these conditions, so we tried to put a lot of focus there and ultimately put five days of good cricket together for the first test,” adds Makram.
