The South African cricket team is on the brink of being crowned ICC World Test champions.

Chasing 282 for victory in the final against Australia at Lord’s in London, the Proteas were on 213 for the loss of two wickets at the close on day three.

They require just 69 more runs to win the test match with eight wickets in hand and two days remaining.

Opening batsman Aiden Markram and an injured Temba Bavuma were the stars of the show.

Markram scored an eighth career test century and together with his captain, who injured his hamstring while batting, put on an unbeaten 143 for the third wicket.

Markram will resume tomorrow on 102 and Bavuma on 65.

Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 207 in their second innings, thanks largely to an unbeaten 58 by tail-ender, Mitchell Starc.

Kagiso Rabada took four for 59 in 18 overs for a match-haul of nine wickets.
