SA’s first democratic Minister of Education Professor Sibusiso Bengu.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the late Professor Sibusiso Bengu, democratic South Africa’s first Education Minister, will be afforded a Special Official Funeral Category 2.
He has also directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast from Tuesday until Friday evening after the funeral.
Bengu passed away last Monday at his home at Mtunzini on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.
He was 90.

VIDEO | President Ramaphosa has sent his condolences to Professor Bengu’s family.
The funeral – which will include ceremonial elements of the police – is to be held at the University of Zululand.
Bengu was an educator by profession.
He served as Minister of Education from 1994 to 1999, when he became ambassador in Germany until 2003.
