‘Probe into alleged infiltration of law enforcement needs timelines’

Corruption Watch says the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the alleged infiltration of law enforcement agencies by criminal syndicates must have clearly defined timelines, and ensure the protection of whistle-blowers appearing before it.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the establishment of the Inquiry on Sunday night in the wake of explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in which he also implicated Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Mchunu has now been placed on special leave.

Moira Campbell from Corruption Watch says the seriousness of these allegations, and their devastating impact on safety and security in the country require that they be pursued with urgency.

“Our key demand includes clearly defined timelines with no extensions, the meaningful protection of whistleblowers, public clearance that are broadcast and accommodation of civil society input. We also insist on three and six months reports as promised by the President. This commission must have the power to refer matters for immediate criminal investigation.”
