Pro-Palestine protestors demand Mandla Mandela’s release

Pro-Palestine protestors in Cape Town have reiterated the call for the release of Mandla Mandela, grandson of the late Nelson Mandela, who was arrested by the Israeli navy on board the Sumud Global Flotilla, which was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

They staged protests at the V&A Waterfront and Canal Walk in Cape Town.

Pro-Palestine supporters in Cape Town have staged a protest outside the retail store, Cape Union Mart, at the V&A Waterfront.

This is against the owner’s alleged support for the State of Israel. Israel has carried out an almost daily bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed in what human rights groups have labelled a genocide.

One of the protestors, Uzair Mohamed, says, “As you know, for two years since the genocide, the PSG has been protesting outside every branch of Cape Union Mart due to the owner, Philip Krawitz. He has declared his support many times on video, and he has declared his support for Israel. He has declared that he is part of the Keren Hayesod Movement, which is a Zionist organisation that helped the establishment of Apartheid Israel before 1948. So, we’re out here today for two years, boycotting Cape Union Mart, inside the stores.”

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) has also reiterated the call for the release of detainees arrested by the Israeli navy on board the Global Sumud Flotilla, including Mandla Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela.

The flotilla was intercepted on Wednesday by the Israeli navy. Its aim was to break the siege of Gaza by delivering humanitarian aid.

Coordinator of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Usuf Chikte says, “It’s not only Mandla Mandela. It’s also Zukiswa Wanner, Fathima Hendricks, Caroline Silva, Raaez Moola and Somaar. All of them have been captured, abducted by Israel, in international waters, at gunpoint, carrying medicines and food for starving populations.”

The owner of Cape Union Mart, Philip Krawitz, has indicated that his fundraising efforts are for humanitarian efforts in Israel and not to fund the Israeli military.
