South African actor Presley Chweneyagae.
Family, friends and colleagues of award-winning actor Presley Chweneyagae will gather at the State Theatre in Pretoria this morning to honour him at a memorial service.
Chweneyagae passed away of natural causes last week, at his home in Pretoria.
The 40-year-old was best known for his leading role in the award-winning 2005 film, Tsotsi.
He starred in various films, including iNumber Number, Zama Zama and the recent telenovela, The River, where he was notorious for his hilarious role of Cobra.
Earlier this week, Chweneyagae’s colleagues said his death was a great loss to the industry.
Veteran actor, Israel Matseke Zulu, says that after the movie Tsotsi was shot, he got closer to Chweneyagae. “I liked Presley … he was younger than me, but I wanted to take care of him in terms of the dangers of the industry, just to mentor and be with him.”
Actor, Rantebeng Makapan, who also mentored Chweneyagae, says: “We have lost a giant, I don’t know what to call him anymore. We lost somebody who could have contributed a lot to this industry, his ideas, he had plans, he wanted us to come back home and try to revive Mmabana (Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation).”
