President Ramaphosa credits South Africans for seamless G20 Summit

President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed South Africa’s historic G20 Presidency as a resounding success both as a diplomatic achievement and a celebration of national unity.

He has also expressed deep gratitude to all those who contributed to making South Africa’s G20 Summit a success.

“Over the past year, our country has hosted tens of thousands of delegates in more than 130 meetings in every part of our country — from Gqeberha to George, Cape Town to eThekwini, Hoedspruit to Polokwane,” he says, adding, “We have also held meetings in other cities on the African continent and beyond our shores”.

In his address to the nation on Sunday regarding South Africa’s G20 and the successful hosting of the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, Ramaphosa says, “We thank the many people from across the country who welcomed visitors to our cities, towns, airports, hotels, conference centres, restaurants and tourist sites.”

African priorities

Ramaphosa emphasises that South Africa used its G20 platform to promote African priorities on the global stage. Key outcomes included G20 commitments to providing debt relief to heavily indebted nations, many of which currently spend more on servicing debt than on health or education, and to increasing climate financing for vulnerable countries.

Leaders also agreed that resource-rich nations such as South Africa should be empowered to process and refine critical minerals domestically, thereby adding value and creating jobs.

National Dialogue

In his address, Ramaphosa appeals to those who he says have been spreading misinformation about the country to join the country’s National Dialogue to ventilate their issues.

United States

The President says South Africa remains committed to engaging in respectful dialogue with the United States. This is despite the US boycotting the G20 Leaders Summit and declaring that South Africa is not welcome to attend next year’s meeting, which it will be hosting as the new president.

Ramaphosa says South Africa continued to be a great friend of the American people. “We offer the people of the United States nothing but goodwill and friendship. We affirm our commitment to continue to engage in dialogue with the United States government and to do so with respect and with dignity as equal sovereign countries. We value the United States government and its people as a partner. We have common interests, common values and a shared wish to advance the prosperity and well-being of the people of both of our countries.”
