Power restored to Weskoppies Hospital after R1.2 million debt payment

The City of Tshwane says it has restored the power supply to Weskoppies Hospital. This follows a commitment by the Gauteng Health Department to settle its R1.2 million electricity debt for March and April.

The City switched off electricity to the facility on Monday.

The department insists that the hospital’s backup power system was fully operational and that patient care continued uninterrupted.

But the DA’s Health spokesperson, Jack Bloom, claims the backup power of five generators and solar power is insufficient to fully power the facility.

Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says the hospital ensures continuous electricity through making additional payments.

“The hospital normally makes an additional payment to ensure a continuous electricity supply; however, this time around, it could not. So the amount being owed is currently being processed for payment already. Yesterday, we settled about 3.8 million to the City of Tshwane, which is a bill for various other facilities. This amount was already scheduled for payment on Monday as part of the payment run to various service providers.”
