Police yet to establish cause of fatal N3 crash

Police are yet to establish the cause of a crash in which eight people were killed on the N3 highway between Van Reenen’s Pass and Montrose in the Free State.

Six other people were injured and taken to hospital following the crash, which happened when a minibus taxi and a truck collided on Thursday morning.

The affected part of the road has been closed.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate has advised motorists to use alternative routes.

Spokesperson, Sindi Msimang says, “The minibus had 14 occupants that is excluding the driver – so all in all – there were 15 people in the minibus. Apparently, the truck was on a steep hill, it lost its power, rolled backwards, colliding with the minibus that was approaching. Through impact, the minibus lost control, overturned and landed on the shoulder of the opposite bound. That’s what happened, according to the driver of the truck.”
