Police say they are working around the clock to rescue an Indian businessman whom a deceased suspected kidnapping kingpin had abducted.
Police shot and killed the suspect in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, on Wednesday. He’s alleged to have been part of a syndicate that kidnaps businessmen and demands ransom to secure their release.
The suspect, who was wanted internationally, is reported to have been convicted on multiple cases of robbery, hijacking and kidnapping.
National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe explains what transpired before the suspect was arrested.
“He started shooting at the police and police returned fire. We can confirm that this wanted kidnapping kingpin who goes by the name of Dollar Man has been shot and killed during this incident. Quite fortunately, none of our police officers was injured during that confrontation. We will know that on Sunday, we are paying tribute to our 27 police officers who died in the line of duty. It is quite fortunate that our members used the tools we gave them to fight back and this is as a result of that. What we do know is this particular suspect is in possession of a South African ID as well as a Mozambican ID.”
