Police warn G20 protests to stay within bounds or face the law

Police are warning all organisations that wish to protest outside the Group of 20 (G20) Leaders’ Summit at the Nasrec Expo Centre to stay within the bounds of the designated speaker’s zones or face the full might of the law.

This comes after two members from Operation Dudula were arrested earlier on Saturday, after chaos erupted as protestors clashed with police, resulting in rubber bullets being fired.

Operation Dudula says the area that’s been designated for protests is too far away from the summit venue.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says, “Our public order policing officers have the powers to enforce the law and they will do so without fear and favour and they were warned numerous times to go back to the speakers corner and they have no right to march on the road where motorists would be inconvenienced and they were already blocking roads and not sticking to the speakers corner.”
