Acting Deputy National Police Commissioner Khosi Senthumule has called on law enforcement agencies, the community and community policing forums to intensify their collaboration to combat violence at taverns and shebeens.
Senthumule was speaking at the Tavern Summit being held in Soweto on Wednesday.
The summit comes after more than 40 people have been killed since January and over 30 others injured, in tavern shootings.
The Saulsville massacre and the Bekkersdal shooting are the latest incidents.
Senthumule has called on communities to work hand-in-hand with police.
“Tavern safety remains a critical issue in South Africa and I am intertwined with broader violence and social challenges. And therefore, as law enforcement, our role is to ensure that we enforce the law and also prevent any crime from happening, but that requires community partnership. So, I would like to say to community leaders that are here, let us also address the root cause of violence in our society, and also make sure those don’t filter in our liquor establishments and ensure that those liquor establishment becomes a safer social space.”
